"The Grail Legend is a beautifully sustained application of Jungian theory to a whole story rather than merely to isolated motifs or archetypes. The work is far better researched than many other Jungian studies, and is written with a spritely, charming touch. A delightful volume."--Robert Segal, University of Lancaster, editor of Jung on Mythology and The Gnostic Jung

I have long groaned over hearing about the “Holy Grail.” Yes, we all know about King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, the magic sword, Excalibur, and Merlin. Even our Presidency has been likened to Camelot. It seemed somewhat shopworn to me. But, as a diligent student, I finally ordered a copy of The Grail Legend, and then it sat on my shelf staring at me for months. Oh groan! But from the time I picked up the book and actually read the numinous saga came alive for me. The authors helped me close many loops in my understanding of Dr. Carl G. Jung’s work, and its significance to us in our everyday lives. Theirs was not the story of Perceval’s adventures, per se, but rather how the story came to have its place in literature and psychology, after centuries of evolution. This is not a question of a debate about whose psychology was right for therapy, but rather what Dr. Jung was saying to us for the lives of normal human beings and their groups. Just as Dr. Jung’s Psychology and Alchemy is the story of human psychic development over centuries, The Grail Legend is a useful example of those insights.Emma Jung knew Dr. Jung’s work as intimately as any person on Earth. Marie-Louise von Franz was a relative newcomer to Dr. Jung’s entourage, nearly forty years his junior, but became one of his leading apostles in the last half of the 20th Century. In order not to be overshadowed by her husband, Emma Jung carved out The Grail Legend as her own intellectual project, and asked Dr. Jung not to interfere. She worked on it for 30 years, in the same meticulous way as her famous husband developed his own oeuvre. The result is a comprehensive masterpiece. She died before she could finish, so Dr. Jung asked his disciple to finish the work, which she did wonderfully. They have given us a tour de force beyond compare, and in the process provided us with many bridges to Dr. Jung’s work itself. By showing how the story of the Grail was embellished and refined over centuries, they have shown us how the human psyche developed and works over decades, generations and centuries. Dr. Jung was doing the same thing throughout his entire oeuvre, but perhaps in not quite so accessible a way for the layman.

I found "The Grail Legend" by Emma Jung [and M. L. von Franz] to be very thoughtful and detailed. Likely, the Holy Grail was a main concern for most of Emma Jung's life. One can readily see why Carl Jung viewed that subject matter as his "wife's turf". "Animus and Anima", also by Emma Jung, is an excellent little summary of Jungian Psychology with a focus on Animus and Anima. In contrast, "The Grail Legend" is so deep and detailed, that I found myself having to review several Jungian works to "keep up". Namely, "Animus and Anima", "The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious" and "Aion". The last two works being by Carl Jung. Very interesting and even inspiring for those interested in Jung, Grail, Merlin, Arthur, Celtic and Celtic Christian subjects from before the "Dark Ages" until the "Present".

This is a very scholarly and thoroughly researched study of the Grail legends. The authors have the most impeccable qualifications imaginable: the wife of C.G. Jung and his most ardent and qualified student, indeed, the carrier of the flame. Students of folklore, myths, legends, and fairy tales will not be disappointed. Students of European literature will likewise find much to be happy about. The underlying research with its many priceless references will be an inspiration to graduate students everywhere as well as a positive goldmine to be sifted through by the truly curious and dedicated. Marie-Louise von Franz has written several other books on Fairy Tales, which are remarkable, and which I would recommend, as well as books and papers elucidating the work of C.G, Jung. Read them by all means, if you are interested in the subject matter. I would also recommend the works of Mary Stewart; The Crystal Cave, The Hollow Hills, and The Last Enchantment. You can't miss.

Great job by Emma Jung, this account of the Grail Legend is a fine intro to the psychology of C.G. Jung as well as a thorough investigation of the legend and it scholarship.

This is a research, non-fiction work that explores the meaning of the Holy Grail, historically and as it fits into religious and cultural frameworks. How has the Idea of the Grail been used down through the centuries? How did it shape the Arthurian ideal? Since the Holy Grail has been popularized in the Indiana Jones movies and books, The DaVinci Code, and a number of operas, movies and TV shows, we have seen a marked interest in our own society. However, let the reader beware, this is a densely written study, which addresses the scholars' interests, rather than wild speculation.

Fascinating insights.

Excellent book.

Very helpful and thorough. Regardless of one's personal views on Jungian theories, this is a major contribution to the understanding of the Grail. A fair amount of German-language material is aptly brought back to the heart of the debate and one or two solid points are made about mediaeval Christianity and Imago Christi; Gnosis often looms in the (rather near) distance but the quality of thought makes it palatable...
