Great subject about a musical master. Should be required material for any new bass player. Entertaining format (more like reading a magazine) with oodles of photos, thorough history, and insight into this bass playing giant. This issue, and reason for the low review, is about the audio CDs. I was shocked to discover that during the binding process, the CDs were literally glued into the binding. They broke immediately when I tried to extract them--and I know a bit about book binding so even precise care in the process was met w/ frustration. So, kudos for a good book but BOO for letting me down on the experience of soaking it up & listening along. For what it's worth, I did an online chat with an Amazon "helper" who claimed he'd credit the account "within a couple of hours"...that was 2 weeks ago and still no credit onto any account that I can find. This is actually my first bad experience with an Amazon order, too bad it's on something that had me doing a happy dance when it initially arrived.
Almost any student of electric bass will want to peruse this book. Motown, soul, funk, R&B, rock & roll, pop-- James Jamerson's influence on so much music is pervasive, and Dr. Licks and the all-star list of contributors show you how by sharing Jamerson's story and getting into the nitty gritty of his music and instrumentation. The first section of the book tells the intertwined story of early Motown and Jamerson and is loaded with fascinating tidbits and micro-stories, many told in the words of folks who were there in Hitsville, USA. You can flip to any page and gain a unique insight that conveys just how special Motown was in the sixties and early seventies-- even Motown could not re-create the Motown sound made immortal during those years.A later section features dozens of transcriptions put together by Dr. Licks and played by famous bass players on the included audio CD's. They do a more accurate job of showing how Jamerson created some of his most famous bass lines than any free bass tab you can find on the internet. However, you'll realize that he probably would have laughed at the idea of people playing his music note-for-note. This is because he and the rest of the rhythm section of Motown's Funk Brothers were given an incredible amount of freedom in the way they performed during recording sessions, especially Jamerson, whose playing style relied heavily on feeling and groove. Bass players could certainly borrow and be inspired by certain elements of his style, but for most people, the transcriptions simply offer a raw glimpse into his off-the-walls musical mind (spoiler alert: it involves lots of syncopation).
James Jamerson defined the Motown Sound of the sixties. Dr. Licks gives the reader a snapshot into the ups and downs of one of the greatest unsung musicians. Although Motown FANactics didn't know him by name, we certainly knew his sound. This is a book for those who love the music made to be heard and those who make the music to be heard. This is a book about the musical genius of James Jamerson.
This unique book is both a classic bass method manual and an important work of music history. One half is a very thorough and informative biography of Jamerson that provides insight into the man and his musical contributions, and also sheds light on the inner workings of the Motown hit factory during its heyday. The numerous transcriptions of Jamerson's great bass lines are invaluable for anyone interested in studying Jamerson's influential style or learning how to play R&B bass. Accompanying music CDs are nothing you'd want to listen to for fun, but they provide accurate demonstrations of the bass lines.
A great book for intermediate and advanced electric bass players which tells the story of the Godfather of electric bass playing James Jamerson. Also there are a bunch of pro bass players who play transcriptions (which are provided in print and on CD's) of some of the hits he played on for Motown. There is also a bass exercise in there that he used to develop his chops on the electric bass. Very good job by the author. Highly recommended book about a bass man that all bass players should know about.
